Some questions...
1. Do you get easily distracted when you read your Bible? 2. Do you use a Bible dictionary to help you when you read? Since we are reading a collection of documents written over a period of 1500 years or more (1400 BC to about 100 AD) we all need help to understand. 3. Is it hard for you to stay focused while you pray? 4. Is continuing education/training a necessity in your vocation? Why? Do you read professional/trade journals? Why? If your boss suggested that you attend a particular conference would you go or would you ignore his suggestion? Do you treat the Lord and his word as of less importance than keeping current on your job? 5. Look at the following purposes for prayer. Which do you think has prominence over the other for prayer? *To bring your our needs to God so we can watch him work and tell others how he answered our prayers. *To bring ourselves into submission to the Lord and his work, whether things go our way or do not go our way, and in the end thank him for his sovereign work. 6. People often share stories of prayers God answered for them positively. Why do you think people do not share the stories of God not answering prayers positively? 7. Why do you think the Bible places so much emphasis on gratitude/thanks in prayer? 8. In Nehemiah's experience we see two very different yet very important kinds of prayer. In Nehemiah 2:4, Nehemiah prayed a short (seconds?) prayer before making a key presentation to King Artaxerxes. He faced an important crossroad in his life and he needed God's help. In Nehemiah 9, Nehemiah and others prayed a long prayer in which they recalled God's goodness. Do you pray both kinds of prayers? 9. How honest are you when you pray? 10. All speech begins with this - you believe there is someone listening (even if that someone is you while taking to yourself!). So it is with prayer. You believe Someone is listening. So, what you believe about the Listener (the Lord) is important. Do you believe you must lobby God with prayer after prayer in order to "win" Him over and thus grant you what you want? Or do you believe He is your heavenly Father who moves in our lives with compassion, justice, love, mercy, and holiness? Do you say you believe the latter while praying like you believe the former?
